Foyle Hospice is inviting people in the Castlederg, Strabane and surrounding area to volunteer and support its charity shops, help at events or promote the Hospice, with opportunities to suit different skills and interests.

FOYLE Hospice is inviting people in the Castlederg, Strabane and surrounding area to “Bring what you can”, with opportunities to support its charity shops, help at events or promote the Hospice.

Today, the Castle Street shop in Strabane continues to turn the community’s generosity into funds that help provide free care for local people and their families.

The Strabane shop also has its very own wedding section, where volunteers can help organise and display beautiful donated bridalwear and accessories, assist customers and help make the experience of finding that special item an enjoyable one.

Castlederg holds a special place in Foyle Hospice’s story as the home of its first charity shop.

Today, the John Street shop continues to turn the community’s generosity into funds that help provide free care for local people and their families.

As part of its volunteer recruitment campaign, the hospice is encouraging more people to become part of its retail legacy by sharing their time, skills or experience.

Shop volunteers play an important role in keeping our stores welcoming, organised and running smoothly.

From serving customers and sorting donations to stock control, organising displays and helping to promote events, there are plenty of ways to get involved.

Whether you have retail experience, a flair for organising and displays, enjoy chatting to people, or would prefer working behind the scenes sorting stock, there’s a role to suit different skills and interests.

Every hour given helps our shops raise vital funds for Foyle Hospice.

Rachael Dobbins, volunteer coordinator at Foyle Hospice, said: "Volunteering in our Castle Street shop is a chance to meet people, be part of a team and help support hospice care through something happening right on your doorstep.

“Living further from the hospice building doesn’t mean you can’t get involved.

"Helping at an event, spreading the word about our services or supporting fundraising in your own community are all ways to make a difference.

“‘Bring what you can’ is about recognising that everyone has something different to offer.

"You might bring a few hours, your people skills or the confidence to try something new.

"Get in touch and we’ll help you explore what could work for you.”

The Castlederg shop on John Street, Rachael added "is where our charity shop story began, and we would love more people to be part of its next chapter. "

Alongside the shop, people in the Castlederg and Strabane areas can ask about helping to promote hospice events or joining the volunteer team on event days.

These opportunities offer a way to contribute for those who may find occasional or seasonal activities easier to fit around work and family life.

The appeal forms part of a wider campaign highlighting seven volunteering areas: Care and Wellbeing Support, Driving, Gardening, Building and Maintenance, Shops, Fundraising and Promotion, and Events.

More than 300 people already volunteer with Foyle Hospice, supporting its work in the hospice, across its six charity shops and out in the community.

People aged 16 and over are welcome to apply, and previous volunteering experience is not needed for most roles.

An informal chat with the volunteer coordinator helps match each person’s interests, skills and availability to the opportunities available, with induction and training provided as needed.
