Local schools and pupils urged to take part in an exciting recycling-themed art competition

DERRY City and Strabane District Council is reminding local schools and pupils that there is still time to take part in an exciting recycling-themed art competition, with entries closing on Friday, October 23.

The competition invites Primary 4 to Primary 7 pupils from across the council area to create a design that could feature on the side of council recycling lorries, helping to spread an important environmental message throughout the district.

Young artists are being encouraged to design artwork that highlights the importance of recycling and promotes positive environmental habits.

The winning artwork will be displayed on council recycling lorries, allowing the successful designer's message to be seen by thousands of households every week.

The initiative aims to raise awareness of the benefits of recycling food and garden waste through the brown bin service.

Food and garden waste collected in brown bins is transformed into high-quality compost which is then used in parks, open spaces and schools across the district.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, councillor Grace Uí Niallais, urged pupils not to miss the opportunity to take part.

"With the closing date fast approaching, I would encourage all eligible pupils to get their entries submitted and take part in this fantastic competition,” she said.

“It is a wonderful opportunity for young people to use their creativity to promote an important environmental message and make a positive contribution to their local community.

"We know there is an incredible amount of artistic talent in our schools and I am looking forward to seeing the imaginative and colourful designs created by our young people.

“As well as having the chance to see their artwork displayed on a council recycling lorry, pupils will be helping to highlight how simple actions, such as recycling food and garden waste, can make a real difference to our environment.

"Good luck to everyone taking part and I would encourage schools to get their entries in before the deadline."

Schools can submit up to ten entries, with designs created using pencils, paints, crayons or any other artistic medium.

The competition is open to all Primary 4 to Primary 7 pupils across the Derry and Strabane district.

First, second and third place prizes will be awarded, along with a prize for the winning school.

The winning school will also receive a special visit from the newly designed recycling lorry and crew for a demonstration and photo opportunity with the Mayor.
