Military historian to address Strabane History Society meeting

The next meeting of Strabane History Society takes place on Thursday, October 29.
A LEADING military historian will be the guest speaker at the next meeting of Strabane History Society (SHS).
Richard Doherty will give a talk titled 'Submarine Warfare in World War Two' on Thursday, October 29, in the latest in series of talks hosted by the local group.
The talk will pay particular reference to the U-boat surrender in 1945.
The Society's Michael Carrick said: "Strabane History Society is delighted to welcome back Richard Doherty from Derry, a loyal contributor to our society over the many years.
"Richard will present one of his favourite topics when he explains about the submarine campaign in the North Atlantic during World War Two.
"He will point out the crucial role played by the naval position of Derry in the war and how Derry was ultimately the focus of the German surrender in 1945.
"Eye-witnesses still talk about the sight of the U-boats sailing up the Foyle and docking at Lisahally Port on the outskirts of the city.
"The destructive and very successful campaign carried out by the German navy had come to an end, and it happened on the shores of the Foyle.
Richard was one of the lead commentators on a two-part BBC TV programme recently and speaks with great authority on the subject."
A warm welcome is extended to all to attend the talk in the Strabane Brass Band rooms at John Wesley Street, off Railway Road, which begins at 7.30pm.
SHS has also extended thanks to the committee of the Strabane Brass Band for the use of their premises.
Next month Sebastian Graham from the Mellon Centre, Omagh, will talk about the Mills around Strabane.
The talk titled will take place on Thursday, November 26.
